Greetings from the Greater NY Chapter of USA Dance!

Hope this newsletter finds everyone well-fed from all that Thanksgiving turkey and trimmings. Hope you had plenty to eat and to be thankful for (I know I did). Now you're all ready to dive headlong into the holiday season, right? Of course you are!
[img:cubt_logo]Let's lead off this week with the Big Apple DanceSport Challenge. This event is the first dance competition being hosted solely by the Columbia University Ballroom Team. For five years, the Columbia Team co-sponsored the MAC with our chapter at Lerner Hall on Columbia's campus, and we are glad to see DanceSport returning in full force to that wonderful venue. At this writing, more than 340 couples -- that's nearly 700 dancers -- are registered to compete, so there should be lots of exciting competition on Saturday. In the evening, the Columbia Team has lined up the new couple of Riccardo Cocchi and Yulia Zagoruychenko to perform, and that show should be fantastic. Sales of general admission tickets for that performance have been suspended but VIP tickets are still available for those who want front row seats to see this excellent couple performing in one of their very first public appearances anywhere. As I have been writing in these newsletters, nothing compares to the energy of a collegiate competition, so if you have not attended one before, the Big Apple DanceSport Challenge awaits your participation as a spectator, so make your way up to Morningside Heights and take a seat in Lerner Hall to catch all the fun. You'll be glad you did!
[img:jennie_derek]Last week on DWTS: We sadly bid farewell to Jennie Garth of Beverly Hills 90210 fame, but . . . can you believe it? Another season of DWTS is coming to an end already. A short two months ago, we saw twelve celebrities lined up in the fifth season opener, which took three nights to present -- first night for the ladies, second night for the guys and then the results show. Now we're down to the top three, and we have two women and one guy in the final. The two women are Marie Osmond (some of you might recall she's a little bit country) and Mel B. ("Scary Spice") and the lone surviving male is Helio Castroneves ("Speed Racer" a/k/a "Great Big Dancing Banana"). The finals will be danced on Monday night with the results being announced on Tuesday night. We have made arrangements to be at ACME both nights, so if you want to come down to the Village and watch the season finale on Monday and Tuesday nights, please join us, in the back, taking over the bar.

My personal prediction: Mel B. will take it. I think Marie will be a close second, with the entire state of Utah voting for her. However, I think Girl Power will triumph, especially with the Spice Girls back on tour again. In dance ability, if Mel B. does win, she would deserve the victory, because over the last two months, her improvement, under the tutelage of Max Chmerkovskiy, has been noticeable. As much as I like Helio, I don't believe he has the votes behind him, and Julianne will not pull off a two-time victory a la Cheryl Burke (with Drew Lachey and Emmitt Smith). Will I be proven right or wrong? Join us at ACME on Monday and Tuesday and let's find out together!
For those looking to social dance, it looks like Club 56 is the place to be on Tuesday nights in Farmingdale, LI. I am informed that their pre-Thanksgiving bash last Tuesday pulled in 80 people, during a week when many were starting to take off for the long holiday weekend. Well done, Club 56! If you are looking to dance salsa, cha cha, merengue, bachata and a mix of other great latin rhythms, make your way to Club 56 on Nov. 27. And for other social dance suggestions, always consult NJoyDancing News & Notes and Wayne's Dance Commentary.
[img:alex_elijah]A prestigious latin and ballroom studio with locations in New York and New Jersey is looking to hire dance instructors. Previous experience in dance instruction is a plus but not required. If you are interested, read this post.
Finally, to close out on a MAC note, you already know that on-line registration has been open for a couple of weeks. For those who need the forms in hard copy, please send an e-mail to registrar@nyusabda.org to get paper forms mailed to you. If you have any other questions about registration, please send them to registrar@nyusabda.org. In the meantime, we hope you are all busy practicing for MAC 2008 and that you plan to register before the December 29 deadline. With the busy holiday season, that deadline will sneak up on you before you know it, so please register ASAP (if not today). (Photo, r., © Igor Ofenbakh.)
That does it for this week. See you at ACME on Monday and Tuesday and Columbia on Saturday!
