Towards the end of May each year, thousands of the world's best and brightest ballroom competitors congregate in a seaside resort in England called Blackpool to compete in the world's biggest, best and most prestigious ballroom competition, the Blackpool Festival. Yet even these dancers must start somewhere, and the future stars of Blackpool get to shine and strut their stuff at Junior Blackpool. This year's event took place from April 9 through 13 and was the event's 50th anniversary. One of the highlights of the event was the Junior Blackpool Team Match, where many countries, including the United States, send a representative team to compete for the honor of being the world's top junior team.
In this profile, we are proud to introduce to you the couples from the United States who represented us at Junior Blackpool in 2007. We look forward to seeing some of these couples perform at the NY USA Dance Spring Fling social, to be held on April 28, 2007, at Stepping Out Studios. These couples are also United States champions and you can also see them competing at various competitions across the country, including the Northeast Regional Championships that took place from April 20 through 22, 2007, in West Orange, NJ, and the USA Dance Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky in August
Ladies and Gentlemen, we present to you our Junior Blackpool Team Match representatives (in their own words, more or less):
Stan Faynerman and Patrycja Golak

Stan has been dancing for about 7 years, loves dancing and wants to be a professional 10-dance ballroom teacher. Jonathan Wilkins and Katusha Demidova are his Standard teachers, and Andrej Gavriline, Elena Kryuchkova and Anatoli Granovski are his Latin teachers. Stan loves to play sports, especially basketball. He is 7-time United States champion in Standard and Latin. Stan represented the United States at World Championships twice. He turns 16 on April 30.
Patrycja has been dancing for 7 years and it is one of the most important things in her life. She loves to hang out with her friends and loves to shop. In her free time she watches tv and goes on the computer. She loves going to the beach in the summer. In the future, she hopes to major in psychiatry and continue her dance career.
Austin Joson and Liza Lakovitsky
Austin and Liza are both 11 years old. Liza has been dancing for 5 years, and Austin just 2 years. Since beginning their partnership one year ago, they have won numerous Preteen Championship titles including the 2006 USA Dancesport National Championships in both Latin and Standard. Just one month after they began their partnership, they won the New Jersey Dancesport Classic Preteen Standard Championship. They represented the United States at the 2006 Juvenile Team at Blackpool Festival. Among other 2006 titles, Austin and Liza most notably won the Standard and Latin Preteen Championships at the 2006 Ohio Star Ball, Embassy Ball, Manhattan Dancesport Championship, and American Star Ball. 2007 Championship titles include Manhattan Amateur Classic Junior 1 Latin and Standard, La Classique du Quebec Juvenile Latin and Standard, and the Arnold Classic Preteen Latin and Standard.
Austin and Liza have performed at numerous charity events including Dance from the Heart, with Principal Dancers from American Ballet Theatre, the cast of “The Color Purple,” and other top dance companies. Based on their exceptional competitive record, they were invited to perform an exhibition dance at the 2006 Ohio Star Ball which was aired on America’s Ballroom Challenge on PBS earlier this year.
Leonid Juashkovsky and Daniella Karagach
Daniella Brittany Karagach was born in Brooklyn, NY, on December 26, 1992. She could never keep still. At age 3 1/2, she began taking ballet classes. She loved to dance and did so at every opportunity afforded to her. When she was 6 1/2, she enrolled in Latin DanceSport classes. She quickly fell in love with DanceSport. She continued ballet and pointe until age 11. Everything in her life centers around dancing. She breathes it. Daniella is almost 14 1/2 years old.

Leonid Juashkovsky was born in Odessa, Ukraine, on January 13, 1992. He came to the US at age 2. He began Standard and Latin DanceSport at age 9. He went to watch a friend's Standard class, and it changed his life. Dance gave him a new feeling of freedom. From that moment on, he knew that he wanted to dance as well. Leonid turned 15 years old right before this year's Junior MAC.
On November 1, 2003, Leonid called Daniella and asked her to be his partner. Daniella agreed. Leonid missed standard and convinced Daniella to start taking group classes after about 7 months into their partnership. Daniella had to give up ballet and pointe to devote her time to learn Standard.
Daniella and Leonid have been dance partners for three years. They are best friends and often refer to each other as "family." They are both enrolled in the business honors program (9th grade) at Franklin D. Roosevelt H.S. They work hard to balance an advanced honors program and their dancing. They are the current US Junior latin dancesport champions (2nd year in a row), 10 dance runners up, and 4th place standard finalists. They will be traveling to Moscow this April to represent the United States in the J2 Standard division.
Daniella and Leonid have a dream of one day opening up their own dance school so that they can share their love of dancing with little children.
Daniel Ostromogolskiy and Monica Riskevich
Daniel Ostromogolskiy (9 years old) and Monica Riskevich (10 years old) have been dancing together for 2 years. They attend dancing classes at The Center for Artistic Development in Brooklyn, NY with professional dancer Elena Frolova. They take part in many dance competitions and always end up among the top couples. They often perform at public events such as Performance at NY City Hall in May 2006, and Russian Heritage Week at Seabreeze Park in Brooklyn in 2006. They also participated twice at the United States DanceSport Championship in Miami, Florida in September 2005 and 2006 and took first place both years. They are very funny and talented children. Their favorite dances are Tango and Jive. Daniel's favorite food is sushi and Monica's is stuffed cabbage. Besides dancing, Daniel's hobby is Sambo, a form of martial arts (he is a member of the Sambo Federation), and Monica's hobbies are gymnastics and tennis.
